What is there left

to say, now

that I’ve lied to you

all night long?

How my fingers curled

too tightly in your hair

was a small lie, hardly

a lie at all, but my hand

quivering in yours

like an egg anxious to give

birth, that was certainly

a lie, and my mouth’s

gentle journey across

your breast was a lie,

and my eager hand’s slow

search for your flesh

beneath the blankets, that

was a lie, and my holding

you desperately, like my life

depended on it, that was

a lie too.

And now this stark morning

what lies are there left

to tell, except the one lie

I must speak to you with words?

I speak it now, give you

the words without guilt:

I don’t ever want to stop

lying to you.
